I like to share my thoughts about really useful and interesting books either from a personal growth perspective or for marketing and management. On this occasion I have some suggestions in each area:
I suggest a look at ‘The Starfish and the Spider ’ by Ori Brafman and Rod A Beckstrom it is published in paperback by Portfolio (originally published in 2006) and essentially this is about the power of leaderless organisations – if you cut off the spiders head it dies; but if you cut off a starfish’s leg it grows a new one and that leg can grow a new Starfish. The traditional hierarchical management model is the Spider and the Starfish is the new remote, organic business model. With all the talk being of virtual teams it seems one to check out.
One of the big buzzes at the moment is social networking and it’s use in the marketing equation, the book that sets it in context is the new (Updated 2009 edition) ‘We –Think ’ by Charles Leadbetter published by Profile books. It tells us all we need to know about this new connected society and its collaborative approaches.
Personal Learning and Growth
My absolute favourite out of the batch is ‘Predictably Irrational’ by Dan Ariely published in hardback (2008) by Harper Collins, it could be put in any of our three sections as it has implications for all aspects of business, marketing and every day life. The joy is that Dan Ariely describes all of his experiments in simple detail which allows you to share in his delight and realise the significance of the implications of his findings.
My other book in this section is ‘Practicing the power of Now ’ by Eckhart Tolle, I am a big Eckhart Tolle fan and this is a distillation from his much bigger ‘The power of Now’ published in 1997 – this is a small hard back ideal to put in the briefcase and to refer to in those ‘reception’ moments – but also with some useful meditations and exercises.
I hope you try these books they certainly have informed my delivery both in style and content.
