Facilitation Skills for Professionals

A one-day programme designed for people who are already involved in using facilitation skills and wish to update and refresh their learning.

Objectives

As a result of attending the course participants will be able to:

  • Understand and manage the dynamics of groups
  • Achieve focus on the needs of individuals and the group
  • Translate the focus into goal oriented plans
  • Give meaning and application to the resulting experiences
  • Challenge and overcome the group’s resistance or avoidance of issues
  • Seek new ways of developing more creative solutions
  • Introduce ways of selecting and organising information for analysis
  • Know ways to move towards decisions and commitment
  • Be better able to deal with disagreements and group conflicts
  • Create a supportive atmosphere and monitor progress

  • What is a facilitator, the role and responsibilities of a facilitator
  • The six dimensions of facilitation: planning, meaning, confronting, feeling structuring and valuing
  • The modes of facilitation: hierarchical, co-operative and autonomous
  • Introductory techniques to set the tone and exploring participants needs and expectations
  • Seeking realistic outcomes from facilitation
  • Facilitation style and authority
  • Stages of the group dynamic
  • Changing the group dynamic
  • Decision modes and procedures
  • Work with parallel thinking for more creative problem solving
  • Using stepping stones to link abstract ideas, organising information with systematic tree diagrams, post-it s, prioritisation matrix and concept schematics
  • Managing the differences between feelings and facts
  • Dealing with alienation, anxiety and conflict
  • Uncovering and resolving sub textural manifestations.
  • Leading groups towards decisions and commitment

Training Methods and Numbers

The course will use a range of experiential workshop exercises to enable participants to try the techniques and ideas discussed. A maximum of six people is suggested if this approach is desired.
